"Why do you choose to be a Rotarian?" I asked during my interview. The weekly meetings keep me informed with the programming & also with table conversations at our meetings.  I get acquainted with people I might otherwise not meet.  Now that I'm retired I find these things are even more important to me.

"Jean Klingaman invited me to a meeting", Kathy said."I admired Jean both as a person & as an involved community volunteer, & I was curious about Rotary. Jean was a wonderful mentor.  She invited me to join after I attended 3 meetings with her. Dave Buck did my new member orientation; the two of them were a terrific combo."

I ask all Women Rotarians that I speak to what their wish for our club is. Kathy replied, "I hope we continue attracting such vital & involved new members, that we reach our goal to End Polio, continue participating in international projects like the Shoebox Project while also fundraising & working on/with local service groups. I am also very enthusiastic about our support of young people by honoring outstanding students in both academics & sports."

Kathy has a BS degree in General Science from U of Iowa with minors in English Literature & History, & Masters in Biology from UNI. She attended U of Calif.Berkeley for one semester. Taught science at East High. Ran United Way Info Line & Volunteer Bureau for several years.  Was travel agent at Short's Travel. Last 22 years was legal investigator at Dutton, Braun, Staack & Hellman, where her husband still works as an attorney. She has daughter Heather in Appleton, WI. More importantly she is grandson Nicolas' (age 4) mother!  Her husband Jean Maurice is dual citizen French/US, which adds a delightful flavor to the family.  Son Paul is the art teacher at Lou Henry Elementary, married to Melissa, principal at EdisonElementary School with 3 children- who delight & challenge Bob & Kathy on a regular basis!

This is the fourth story of "Women in Rotary" in a series of 6 stories. We now have 43 active women Rotarians in our club alone and would certainly like to have more. Please share Kathy's story with others. Bring a guest Jan 4th to hear Karel Murray. Women will be very motivated after that luncheon. Take the opportunity to show others WHY ROTARY!
