Only 19 cases in nine months of 2016 and none for more than a month

The latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO) says only 19 new cases of wild polio virus had been reported this year as of August 3, about half of the 34 cases reported by the same time a year ago. And Nigeria, which had been one of the countries where polio was present, hasn’t reported a new case for two years as of July 24.

Thirteen of the 19 new cases were reported in Pakistan and another six in Afghanistan. Last year at this date Pakistan had reported 28 cases and Afghanistan six.
