Only 27 new cases in the first six months of 2015 and no new cases anywhere in the world since May 6 in Pakistan.

The United Nations reports 27 new cases of wild polio so far in 2015 compared to 111 at the same time one year ago. Twenty four of the cases happened in Pakistan and three in Afghanistan. Nigeria, which had been one of the three countries where polio had yet to be eradicated, hasn’t reported as single case since July 24, 2014, a truly remarkable accomplishment.

Public health officials report polio in two categories—wild and circulating, which are new cases in countries which had been considered polio-free.
