Back to school sales makes this a good time to do your part for our club’s major project

Shoebox/layette King Steve Thorpe asks club members to bring their filled box to our August 31 meeting. He hopes every member will fill at least one and maybe a layette kit as well.
Sorting and packing will start in early September at the former food bank building at East 11th and Sycamore so they can be shipped to Houston before the end of the month.
This is our club’s largest service project, now in its 14th year and possibly the largest in Iowa. Boxes go to children in one of the eight schools we support in and around Chinendega, Nicaragua. In order to qualify, children must attend school regularly and meet minimum test scores. Our connections in Nicaragua tell us education is one of the best ways for citizens there to escape the cycle of extreme poverty.

This year’s trip to distribute boxes and layette bags will be December 2-9. Please contact Steve for complete details.
