Bob was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. He graduated in medicine from EdinburghUniversity in 1957 with distinction in dermatology and chest diseases. His internship and two years mandatory military service were followed by six years of general practice in North Wales. Bob emigrated to Cobourg, Ontario, Canada in 1966, where he continued in general practice until 1994 and then concentrated his time as medical director of a home for the aged and other geriatric facilities until 1997. He was a Coroner for the Province of Ontario and investigated more than 1,200 cases before retiring in May 2000.

 

Bob has been a member of the Rotary Club of Cobourg since 1971 and became Club President in 1978-79. He has served Rotary International as Vice President 1997-98 and Director 1996-98. Following his term as District Governor, District 7070, in 1987-88, Bob became a member and then chairman of the Extension Committee. In subsequent years Bob has been a member of many other International Committees and Task Forces and represented District 7070 on two occasions at the Council on Legislation. He has taken part in many National Immunization Days in India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt. In 2002-03 he was the co-director of the Polio Eradication Fundraising Campaign.

 

Bob is a Trustee of The Rotary Foundation for the years 2004-08 and this Rotary year, 2007-2008, he is Chairman of The Rotary Foundation and a member of the Executive, Stewardship and Fund Development Committees. In addition Bob is Chairman of the International PolioPlus Committee.

 

Bob has received the Service Above Self Award, the Citation for Meritorious Service, the International Service Award for a Polio Free World, the Four Avenues of Service Award and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He has been named and "Outstanding Leader" in Polio Eradication by the United Nations Foundation and received the Glenn Sawyer Award from the Ontario Medical Association for professional and community achievement. The Rotary Club of Cobourg dedicated in his name it's Centennial project, The Harbour Front Park.

 

Bob is married to Ann, an honorary Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, and both are Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation and members of the Arch Klumph Society. They have three daughters and one son, all married, four grandsons and four granddaughters.
