Wintry Return for Nicaragua Team
by Buck, David

Despite a two-day delay getting home, all agreed it was a great experience.

Most of the thousand or so people who help us send gifts and supplies to our friends in Nicaragua see only one part of the program- -the part they're working on. But for the 22 who traveled south this year, the picture is more complex with a dozen or so efforts underway.  For Nathan Carignan, it was pretty overwhelming.  We hope to get this West High freshman to speak to the club sometime about his experience.
Isaac Continues to Battle Rickets
by Buck, David

Last year we told you about Isaac, a nine-year old boy from Leon, Nicaragua, who suffered from one of the worst cases of rickets.

His feet were so turned in that he walked on his ankles. We visited him again this week to deliver a Christmas box and to check up on him. Doctors at the Shriner's Hospital have made a big difference in his life; now he's playing baseball, riding his bike, and resuming his "normal" life. His trip to the US for surgery was paid for by a Texas Rotarian. Steve Thorpe, who led the team, had a special box for him.
Ever wonder about those kids with Rotary shirts?
by Buck, David

Every year we buy shirts for Waterloo's sports programs

Somebody asked Steve Carignan recently about young kids wearing tee shirts with the words, "Waterloo Rotary Club." Like most newer members, he was unaware of the program.

For many years, probably more than 20, we've paid for tee shirts for kids from pre school through second grade who participate in programs run by Waterloo's Leisure Service department who play T-ball, indoor and summer soccer. Maybe your child or grandchild has one of those shirts.

Funding comes from one of several funds we have at the Community Foundation; earnings most years are enough to cover the $2,000 expense.

            Now you know.

In "Rotaryspeak," Wasrag is an Important Acronym
by Buck, David

Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group Faces Major Health Issues

Wasrag's mission statement is, "Rotarians working to improve Life and Livelihood through the provision of Safe Water and Sanitation." And despite its low profile, the group has demonstrated it can get things done.

Clean drinking water and improved sanitation are major goals of the United Nations as expressed in its Millennium Development Goals statement and also rank his on the Rotary Foundation list.

The group was launched in 2007 and hold a world water summit every year just prior to RI's international convention. The next one is planned for June 19, 2010 in Montreal. Earlier this year the group announced a collaboration with US Aid for International Development to spend $6 million on water projects in Dominican Republic, Ghana and the Philippines.

And wasrag is constantly looking for volunteers and funding. To learn more, go to the group's web page, www.wasrag.org.
