The Cedar Rapids Opera will be performing this famous (at one time infamous) opera Salome at the Gallagher Bluedorn January 15 and 17 and Tony Nickel from Cedar Rapids will preview it for us January 11. The one-act production is based on a play by Oscar Wilde and music by Richard Strauss; what more could you want. >

Committee Scores Hit with Effort to Attract Women
Wow, Bam, Zam! Fantastic Job!
You filled the hall, and more seats had to be added! The January 4 meeting set a record turnout for the past year in guests invited to Rotary.
Friends, colleagues, daughters, and wives, were invited to hear professional speaker Karel Murary deliver the message of working with fellow volunteers. Karel's topic of "Building a Better You One Story at a Time," touched the managerial needs of all in attendance.
Several goals for the Membership Committee headed by Tom Arthur are on the horizon including handing out application forms at the January 11 meeting, the honoring of the Courier Communication's 20 Under 40, and the production of a promotional brochure to be used in telling the Waterloo's Club Rotary story to perspective members.
The goal of attaining 40 new members is on the horizon, Arthur predicts. "Won't each of you start to think about a young professional, a shaker and mover, perhaps the son or daughter of a friend working in our community, to invite as a guest to the 20 under 40 Recognition?" he urges.

Tired of Shoveling Snow Yet?

December total nearly a record.
According to KWWL Meteorologist Mark Schnackenberg, Waterloo recorded 27.3 inches of snow in December, not quite a record and almost the average annual total of 33 inches. And we might have broken the record of 34 inches in December, 2000 if it had been a little cooler on Christmas day and the 0.77 inches of rain had turned to snow.
Here's a reminder on the club policy on snow closings.
If the Waterloo Community Schools are closed before 8 AM on a Monday, our club will not meet that day.
Waterloo recorded 39.75 inches of precipitation in 2009, seven more than average, but eight inches fewer than in Cedar Rapids and 16 fewer than Charles City. Feel better?
