Fellow Rotarian Dr. Jay Ginther will speak to us about bone health Monday. May was National Osteoporosis Month, and his brand new state of the art facility at ADI provides many services previously unavailable in the Cedar Valley.

Busy week for club projects

Members participated in a parade, gave away money, volunteered at a conference, and prepared for fund raiser
President Steve Carignan and President Elect Amber Jedlicka were featured in a convertable in the My Waterloo Days parade on Saturday, June 5. Walking ahead of the car were Tom Arthur and Kelli McCarthy carrying a Rotary banner and ahead of them were Kelli's daughter and a friend carrying a second banner.
In My Waterloo Days tradition, the rain stopped just before the parade started and a few club members were spotted along the route.
At Monday's regular meeting, President Steve presented Waterloo Leisure Services Director Paul Huting with a check for $2,500 to support Mark's Park, a new splash pad/play area. It will be a great asset to downtown, and may open as soon as next summer.
Tuesday and Wednesday, 27 members worked as room monitors at the VGM Heartland Conference at the convention center. Many of the volunteers worked more than one two-hour session and super volunteer Tom "I'm retired" Arthur worked all six.
For their efforts the 27 earned $1,000 for Hops & Grapes. Here is a link to the volunteer list, please thank these people for stepping up and earning a nice supplement to our yearly fund raiser.
Meanwhile, Annie Vander Werff, Tara Sagers, Patty Achey Cutts and others were pulling together last minute details for "Hops and Grapes."
That's why they call us a service club.

"Hops and Grapes" Committee is Ready!

Now it's your turn to support committee's efforts
Our club's major fund raiser of the year is tomorrow. Your Hops & Grapes committee has overcome several obstacles to make the event special, including moving the location to the Isle Casino to make it more accessible to more people. Now it's your turn to step forward and help reach the goal of raising $20,000 for local charities and club projects.

--Bid on items at the silent auction

--Proceeds go to American Red Cross, Peoples Community Health Clinic and Boys and Girls Clubs with some funds for our club's charitable work.

How about an international experience in your own home

Club needs several homes for inbound youth exchange students
You can help the club fulfill its obligation by opening your home to one of the two boys and one girl for about six weeks this coming school year. They will arrive in mid August and will attend West High School. Host families provide room and board, provide rides to school and other minor assignments.
The two boys are from Argentina and the girl is from France.
Our obligation to house students comes from our sponsorship of Jerry Nora, an outbound student who attended Columbus High School where he was a state champion tennis player.
While the effort to take one of the students into your home is no small matter, those who have done it once tend to do so several times. If you are interested, please contact Kevin McCrindle.

Four club members honored for Eight over Eighty

Courier promotion has definite Rotary flavor
Ike Leighty, Harold Brock, Tunis Den Hartog and Ed and Kathy Gallagher have been selected as the first group of residents of the Cedar Valley who are leaders in the community.
They and the four non Rotarians will be honored June 24 at a luncheon at the Park Place Event Centre. They were picked from a field of 58 nominees. Tickets for the luncheon are available from Angela Dark at the Courier, 291-1573.
