Dr. Grace is in Waterloo for just a few days on a speaking tour, and is excited to meet as many "Cedar Valleyans" as possible.  President Mason extended an invitation to her through a mutual friend to join us Monday as we honor our high school football players.

   Future additions include Football Luncheon photos, a year-by-year history of our club, amusing photos of fellow Rotarians from the 80s, and an interactive group photo from 2005, and an interactive map of the Cedar Valley detailing our club's past and present projects.

   If you have any historic documents you'd like to share, (newspaper clippings, photos from events, old photo directories, or even stories you'd like to recount) get in touch with President Mason.  This website can hold A LOT of information, we should use it and be proud of the long and prestigious hisotry of our club.

         It's a long tradition to honor high school football players at our club, to recognize each team's most valuable player and then to award the Glen "Doc" Miller trophy to the single outstanding player in the three high schools.

         Be with us today to see who wins the award and to honor all senior players for their commitment of time and energy.

            At its monthly board meeting October 29, three resignations were approved, bringing the total for the year to 13 since July 1. In that same period we've added only five new members.

            The net loss of eight members, reducing membership to 185, puts a strain on the already tight club budget.

            There are two things we can do to help the situation: Ask someone you know to join the club. And work to make new members feel welcome so they don't decide to resign. Your club thanks you.

               In October the board decided to save hundreds of your dues dollars and eliminate the weekly printed Rotary Reporter.  Instead we have a weekly on-line version and a monthly printed version that is currently being mailed to 41 members.

Senator Barack Obama attended a fundraiser for Bruce Braley at the Rotary Reserve, and less than 1 year later, both men have decisive election victories.

Waterloo Rotarians should be very proud of the beautiful facility we have built at the Reserve, and our campaign to fund the new addition is still under way.

The Pork Chop Dinner Thursday night will be a great opportunity for you to walk in the footsteps of our next president, you can register online.

            No meeting today because of the pork chop dinner November 6 at the Rotary Reserve.

Program for next week, November 17, is the annual volleyball banquet. And on November 24 we host the annual football banquet.

Caught in the Middle

            Chicago Tribune writer and author Richard Longworth will be in the valley November 17-18 talking with leaders about the thesis of his book, "Caught in the Middle- -America's Heartland in the Age of Globalization."

            Among the many opportunities to hear Longworth will be one at University Book and Supply on the 18^th at 6 pm.

            His book details the unique struggles facing communities in the Midwest as they try to convert from "rust-belt manufacturing" to the 21^st century economy. He will also speak at a chamber event and at a closed meeting while in town. His views are very interesting and reinforce many of the things local leaders are trying to do to make the valley vibrant well into the future.

End Polio Now-We Need Your Help

            On November 3 we heard a plea to support the "End Polio Now" campaign of the Rotary Foundation to match the $100 million gift from the Gates Foundation.

            If every member does their share, it works out to $36 each. But many of the checks on the 3^rd were for more than that. Please do your share. Make your check payable to the Rotary Foundation and give it to Kelli. Gifts will count towards your Paul Harris Fellowship.
