Women in Rotary - A look into increasing membership of "Woman Rotarians"

   Amber Jedlicka, only 30, is director of Landmark Commons of Friendship Village, recipient of the very distinct recognition of 20 under 40 for 2009, a wife, a mother, and a Rotarian!

     "Why do you choose to be a Rotarian?" I asked during my interview.

"A big attraction is the service without a profit and to have that as a part of my values that will be passed onto my children.  Serving others has always been a passion, and service through Rotary is just one other way to lead by example," replied Amber.

      I was curious who invited Amber to her first meeting or if she was simply asked to join. I also wondered how well the club was explained before she committed to becoming a member and found out her sponsor did a terrific job of representing Rotary. I found Mr. Chuck Dalton is Amber's sponsor.  She joined in March of 2007, during the construction phase of Landmark Commons.  Chuck is a resident of Landmark Commons, so he and Amber tried to make a point to meet for breakfast at Perkins once a month or so to talk about Rotary and what it meant to be a member of a select service club. "Mr. Dalton has been a terrific role model and mentor and I continue to be grateful for his guidance and support", Amber stated. Amber has continued to go forward with his guidance and has since helped bring in a new member Tara Sagers-Ken Cutts is her sponsor.

     While involved with Rotary she has been on the board of directors since 2008. She chaired the Hops and Grapes local service project in 2009 and assisted Cheers to You, CedarValley in 2008. Amber is our President elect to serve 2010-2011 and I believe we will be very fortunate to have her serve in that role.

    Amber's education consists of a Bachelor of Arts in Family Services and Gerontology from the University of Northern Iowa.  Amber is the wife of Nick Jedlicka. They share the joys and responsibilities of their two beautiful girls, Isabella, age 3, and Gabrielle, one year old.

     What is your Wish for the club Amber?"My wish is that our club will be to continue to guide and develop the young professional as many members

have done for me," she said. 

      This is the third story of "Women in Rotary" in a series of 6 stories.

We now have 43 active women Rotarians in our club alone and would certainly like to have more. Please share Amber's story with others.

Mike was chosen by sportswriters and broadcasters in the metro area after being nominated by his coach Lonnie Moore. The two other nominees were Nick Maas from Columbus ans Harrison Shelby III from East High. All 3 will get a plaque donated by Roger Olesen and his name will be added to the travelling trophy which will stay at West for another year.
