With Nigeria now rid of polio, only two countries remain in our quest for a polio-free world.

July 24, 2015 marked 12 months since the last reported case due to wild poliovirus in Nigeria had onset of paralysis. That means the entire continent of Africa is considered to be polio free.
There are now just two countries in the world where the wild virus is active—Pakistan where there have been 28 confirmed cases as of June 30, and Afghanistan with only five cases. The other good news is that of the three strands of the virus, all cases this year are from type one, the least deforming version.
R.I. President Ravi Ravindran noted, “We’ve come a long way since the bleak years when the virus reached its peak. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa- three quarters of all cases in the world.
“We congratulate Rotarians who have donated $688.5 million to fight polio throughout Africa, including more than $200 million to Nigeria. We congratulate Rotarians from Africa and around the world who have also devoted countless hours to immunize the children who now have the opportunity for healthier, happier lives.”
