After a blip in Nigeria, polio eradication back on course
We reported last month that public health officials in Nigeria reported a new case of polio after more than a year of being polio free.
The global polio eradication emergency response center there launched a campaign to prevent further cases using a mix of the oral and injectable vaccines and it apparently is working.
Elsewhere those same health officials report 29 new cases this year thru September 21 compared to 50 at the same date a year ago. Fourteen of the 29 cases this year have been reported in Pakistan with an additional nine in Afghanistan. Neither country has reported any new cases in the last 30 days, however.
The promise that, “We are this close” is being fulfilled.
