No formal vote was taken March 7, but all comments appeared to favor the increase.

During a club discussion of financial issues facing our club, members were asked their opinion of raising the suggested gift to the Fred Adams Fund from 50 cents per year of members age to $1. Contributions are strictly voluntary but encouraged, even for members who miss the birthday table meetings.
The discussion came after club Treasurer Julie Hayes detailed how money from that account is used to give scholarships every year to students at UNI, Hawkeye College and Allen College. She noted that with fewer members making those contributions and recent poor performance by the fund which is managed by The Community Foundation, it no longer generates enough to give winners $1,000 each.
Some members also suggested putting the proposed gift on quarterly statements; the club’s board will explore that recommendation.

Fred Adams joined our club in 1915 shortly after it was chartered and continued until his death 71 years later. He proposed dozens of people for membership and never failed to step forward for club projects. In later years when he could no longer do physical labor, Fred opened his checkbook and was an inspiration to many of us.
