First Meeting of 2010

Make a Resolution to Support the Rotary Foundation
by David Buck Change the world with a gift of $2 per week Through the Annual Programs Fund, which is the primary source of funding for Rotary Foundation programs, Rotarians help make the world a better place. For the 2008-09 Rotary year, approximately 313,000 Rotarians participated in the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative, which funds the Annual Programs Fund. About 242,000 of those contributors are Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members contributing $100 or more a year. As of July 1, 2009, the start of the Rotary year, more than $13.6 million has been raised toward the Foundation's $96 million goal. If every one of the 1.2 million Rotarians contributed just $2 a week, in one year the foundation could raise almost $125 million. That's money that goes back to Rotarians in the form of scholarships and grants for projects that bring hope and make a difference in the lives of countless people. Rotarians have used grant money to bring sight to those blinded by cataracts, bought wheelchairs for those who could not use their legs, gave clean water to those made sick by contaminated water, and opened up new worlds by helping people learn to read. Community Foundation Helping Rotary's Programs
by David Buck Special accounts help our club fund several programs Around the country several Rotary clubs have established separate foundations to fund projects, but our club decided several years ago to use the Community Foundation for that purpose. In addition to considerable savings in expenses and special state tax benefits, the Community Foundation also offers professional investment expertise. Mary Ann Burk is president and CEO, as well as a member of our club for 16 years. During that time the Community Foundation has grown in assets from less than $2 million in 1993 to over $41 million today, becoming a major force for community betterment. In 2007 it made grants in excess of $5 million. Last month she spoke to our club and listed projects our two groups have worked on. They include: 1. Scholarships every year to students at UNI, Hawkeye Community College and the Allen College of Nursing. 2. Another fund underwrites support to youth programs in Waterloo run by Waterloo Leisure Services and the Optimist Club. 3. A third fund supports our efforts in Nicaragua. 4. A fourth fund is designed to support maintenance of the Rotary Reserve lodge and buildings. We have also established a Waterloo Rotary Charitable Foundation Endowment Fund for individuals to benefit any of the charitable activities Rotary may want to participate in to support our community. There are so many charitable projects Rotary could support in our community with just a little extra amount of dollars. It could be supporting a Habitat for Humanity House for example, or Kid's Night at the Boys and Girls Club. The opportunities to meet needs and participate in projects for our community are endless. As Waterloo Rotary Charitable Foundation Endowment Fund is a permanent endowment, gifts to this Fund, because it is with a Community Foundation that meets National Standards are eligible for the 20% state tax credit on the gift as well as the normal federal and state deduction for the gift. Our club board receives quarterly reports on all funds and reviews them. Mary Ann also explained that the foundation can accept several types of gifts, including cash, real estate, appreciated stocks, etc. Although it may be too late to make end of year planned gifts this year, she encouraged members who are interested to contact her and their estate panning team for details and tax consequences. |
