Music Director Jason Weinberger previews symphony's 09-10 season

The WCFSO enters its 80^th season this fall with the big three of assets:

1.      A great collection of musicians

2.      A highly regarded music director who challenges them, and

3.      The best performance space in the state and beyond.

Since joining the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony as its music director six years ago, Jason Weinberger has made a mark in Iowa with exceptionally committed performances, creative programming, and extensive community engagement. Under his baton the orchestra has taken major artistic strides, performing a variety of new and recent American music and hosting such guest artists as Yo-Yo Ma, David Shifrin, Peter Schickele, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Off the stage Jason has become a leading advocate for music throughout the CedarValley, and as part of that effort he spearheads the programming and presentation of the WCFSO's diverse educational and outreach initiatives.

 Donors of $1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, or the Humanitarian Grants Program, or people who have that amount contributed in their name, can be recognized as Paul Harris Fellows. Two of our club members have reached that goal, and will be presented their certificates Monday. 

Becoming a Paul Harris fellow is a very important part of being a Rotarian, as every amount contributed to The Rotary Foundation is spent in support of humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs and their operations. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out worthy projects worldwide.

               Rotarians from over 150 countries are landing here for their 100th annual convention in Birmingham. Some events are already in progress with the official opening session on Sunday.

               And while the Courier, Register and Channel 7 opted not to cover the event, your Rotary Reporter is there.

               The Queen apparently won't be there; today is Lady Day at Royal Ascot and that apparently is more important. Too bad Kathleen Wernimont can't see the hats.

               Even without her majesty, there will be plenty of star power, including Bishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall, D.K. Lee and others. Remember him? He's our president.

               Committee Chair Amber Jedlicka told club members Monday that 204 tickets were sold for Hops & Grapes June 11 for $7,140 and the silent auction grossed about $4,500, making total revenue $11,640. All numbers are subject to change when Kelli returns from vacation.

               She also thanked committee members for their hours of hard work, including Ken Cutts, co-chair; Carol Walters, Ann Vanderwerff, Uynthia Duncan, Shannon Farlow, Todd Wordell, Bill Roths, Todd Rohlfsen, Stan Anderson, President Mason Fromm and President Elect Steve Carignan plus Kelli (the glue) McCarthy.

               If you missed it, you missed a great time with especially great food and beverages.

               Cost will be $12.50 per person or $25 per couple. The menu includes steak, baked potato, salad bar and ice cream with strawberries.

               Attendees are reminded to bring their own table service and a bottle of wine or beer to share.  No hard liquor, please.  Please RSVP to Kelli or online.

               Because of the steak fry, the regular meeting on Monday, June 29 is cancelled.
