Pumpkin Soup and Shrapnel - Growing Up Under the Third Reich
, is a memoir of a person who grew up in Berlin, Germany, beginning in 1939. In the process she survived the allied bombing of Berlin, the Russian onslaught through East Prussia, the terrible chaotic days of the horrific final battle for Berlin, and the starvation which ensued thereafter.
She was the daughter of early and ardent members of the Nazi party. The book also deals with the indoctrination of a young child in Hitler's Reich and Communist East Germany. She later embraced freedom in West Berlin and studied at the universities of Berlin and Heidelberg.
The book's author Gunda Davis will join us today.

Hops and Grapes a Huge Success

The crowd was bigger than last year and the team at The Isle did a fantastic job with food and setup. Club members who were on the committee outdid themselves.
One detail has been released: Attendees picked the Boys and Girls Club for the largest portion of the proceeds with Peoples Community Health Clinic next and the Red Cross third. Our club will get one fourth of the net before distributions are made. Club funds will be available for our own projects, such as buying coats for "Operation Warm."

Working the VGM Conference was rewarding

The check was delivered Monday, but not for the agreed amount of $1,000
Lori Stewart from VGM presented our club with a huge thank you at Monday's meeting - in the form of a $2,000 check. She reported feedback on our volunteers was very positive, in fact, Van G. Miller described our members as "dynamite".
More than a dozen members volunteered at least 1/2 a day of their time to serve as room hosts for VGM's various seminars. Their gift of time has resulted in a large supplement to our Hops & Grapes proceeds which will be divided between our club and three local charities. Thank you to all who served!

Four club members honored for Eight over Eighty

Courier promotion has definite Rotary flavor
Ike Leighty, Harold Brock, Tunis Den Hartog and Ed and Kathy Gallagher have been selected as the first group of residents of the Cedar Valley who are leaders in the community.
They and the four non Rotarians will be honored June 24 at a luncheon at the Park Place Event Centre. They were picked from a field of 58 nominees. Tickets for the luncheon are available from Angela Dark at the Courier, 291-1573.

Beverly Hinders Trost thanks a long-time friend

She makes her friend a Paul Harris Fellow
Beverly was already a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF), and she had arranged to automatically transfer $30 per month from her bank account to the foundation using a program called TRF Direct. TRF is an acronym for The Rotary Foundation.
After three years she had enough for a second PHF, but she elected to use her points to award the honor to her good friend, Karen Urban.
After an individual has accumulated $1,000 in recognition points and has become a PHF, he or she is eligible to receive one foundation recognition Point for every dollar contributed to the Annual Programs Fund, Polio Plus, or approved matching grant.

How about an international experience in your own home

Club needs several homes for inbound youth exchange students
You can help the club fulfill its obligation by opening your home to one of the two boys and one girl for about six weeks this coming school year. They will arrive in mid August and will attend West High School. Host families provide room and board, provide rides to school and other minor assignments.
The two boys are from Argentina and the girl is from France.
Our obligation to house students comes from our sponsorship of Jerry Nora, an outbound student who attended Columbus High School where he was a state champion tennis player.
While the effort to take one of the students into your home is no small matter, those who have done it once tend to do so several times. If you are interested, please contact Kevin McCrindle.
