            Club leaders are asking each Rotarian buy two tickets and sell the two extra enclosed tickets to friends who would enjoy the evening. Cost per ticket is only $35. Checks should be made out to the Community Foundation, and may be tax deductible.

HOPS & GRAPES is scheduled for Thursday, June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rotary Reserve.  Enjoy fine wines, specialty beers, and fine cuisine prepared by Martin Vollmer, former owner/chef of Martin's Brandenburg in Waverly.  Proceeds raised at the event will directly benefit the CedarValley.  The club voted and the following charities were chosen: Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts of America, and Northeast Iowa Food Bank.  All three charities receive a share of the proceeds!  At the event each attendee will be allowed to cast a vote for their favorite.  Last year's event had a net income of $8,425 and the club voted for three local charities.

What better way to Celebrate the Cedar Valley and our local service project then by holding up your glass and giving cheers at the Downtown Rotary Hops and Grapes food, wine, and beer event. Entertainment for the evening will be a performance by Mick Staebell.

               The annual Northland Breakfast at the Rotary International Convention will be Sunday, June 21 at 7 AM in the Hilton Birmingham Metropole,

North Dakotanative a former Rotary scholar

The May 11 release of former Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar  and U.S. journalist Roxana Saberi, imprisoned in Iran on charges of spying, brought elation and relief to people worldwide, especially to Rotarians of Fargo, North Dakota.

Saberi, a Fargo native, was arrested in January and initially accused of working with expired press credentials, but authorities later charged her with espionage. Her release came after an Iranian appeals court reduced her eight-year prison sentence to a suspended two-year sentence.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fargo, Saberi was selected as a 1999-2000 Ambassadorial Scholar to attend the University of Cambridge, where she studied journalism.

              The club's annual steak fry for members and guests will be Thursday, June 25 at the Rotary Reserve north of Cedar Falls. Cost will be $12.50 per person or $25 per couple. The menu includes steak, baked potatoe, salad bar and ice cream with strawberries.

               Attendees are reminded to bring their own table service and a bottle of wine of beer to share. No hard liquor, please. (See next story). Please RSVP to Kelli

               Because of the steak fry, the regular meeting on Monday, June 29 will be cancelled. 

               While investigating insurance requirements for the upcoming Hops and Grapes event, we discovered that we'd need a liquor license to alow members to bring liquor to the Reserve. Oops.

               In addition, the Reserve is the only county facility which allows liquor and then only for our club. But the cost of a one-year licenes plus the added insurance makes it way too expensive.

               Fortunately, Lynn Walding, administrator of the Iowa Alcohlic Beverages Division, told the Des Moines Register April 15 that, "a club could allow its member to bring their own beer and wine  for consumption without a state liquor license, assuming it wasn't prevented by city ordinance."

               We can't even claim we didn't know better, so keep the board out of jail and stick to beer and wine at the steak fry.
