One of the highlights of our program year is the recognition of top high school seniors. Be sure to join us.

Two Waterloo "Duck Buyers" rewarded

Jay Crisp, Howard Gallatin each have their duck picked
Jay and Howard were two of 12 people who will receive credit for $500 towards their Paul Harris Fellowships.
Of the more than 1,200 plastic ducks dumped into the pool at the hotel in Dubuque, 160 had been bought by our club. So it was fitting that two of the 12 that were selected were "ours."

Club, members pick up awards at district conference

Our club won both the Governor's Excellence Award and the Presidential Citation at the district conference.
Winners were announced May 1 at the distict conference in Dubuque.
The Presidential Citation requires work in four areas, one of which is growth of at least one new member in the year which began last July.
And our club has won the Governor's Award every year since it was introduced in 2005 by then Governor Steve Thorpe.

Waterloo can sparkle with your help!

"Festivus" is Main Street Waterloo's annual clean-up day
Each spring, dozens of volunteers work to clean up our downtown in anticipation of Friday'Loo, the 4th Street Cruise, My Waterloo Days, and of course, RAGBRAI! If you can help, meet at the Main Street office by Lincoln Park at 9am Saturday.
The flower baskets will be hung NEXT Saturday, the 15th, due to a frosty forecast this Saturday night. We'll need volunteers with trucks to help transport flowers that day - more details next week!
Let's have a good turnout Saturday and demonstrate how important downtown Waterloo is to the rest of the Cedar Valley! Sign up on the Rotary website now!

More Volunteers needed for VGM Meeting

We'll earn $1,000 if we can provide room ambassadors for their educational sessions.
The role of the room ambassador is to monitor attendance by having each attendee sign in for the session and collect evaluations which they must complete at the end of the session.
Room ambassadors will also be required to introduce each session from a script which will be provided. Ambassadors are the main point of contact for attendees and are to make sure sessions run smoothly. Click the links in the dates below to volunteer.
Tuesday, June 8 from 9:00 - 1:00 (1 volunteer needed) and also from 1:00 to 5:00 (2 volunteers needed)
Wednesday, June 9 from 7:15- to 12:15 (1 volunteer still needed) and also from 12:15-5:30 (5 volunteers needed)
Thursday, June 10 from 8:30-12:30 (5 volunteers needed) and again from 12:30-5:00 (3 volunteers needed)

Exchange Students Find Athletics Important Part of School

Running and tennis help two Rotary students
Outbound youth exchange student Jim Nora of Waterloo Columbus will be gunning for another state tennis title this month. The May 5 Waterloo Courier detailed his impressive record including a state doubles title as a freshman with his older brother. Jim is unbeaten this year and has won 66 of 71 games. Next year he will travel to Argentina for a year.
Meanwhile, Ambassadorial Scholar Maggie Luce participated in a 10 K race in Limerick, Ireland last week. "I participated in the 10k and walked it with a friend from school. Rotary was heavily involved," Maggie reports.
"It was a great way to see the city and enjoy the fresh air! Over 7,000 people participated and it was a fun Sunday. A good way to take a break from the library. One more paper left before summer," she adds. Maggie is also a Columbus grad and is spending the year on a $26,000 Rotary scholarship paid for from our contributions four years ago.
