Trophy to the MVP donated Roger Oelsen. Next Monday we do the same thing for football teams with Mike Young in charge and we present the Doc Miller MVP trophy. |

Perlman Wows, Scott Motivates
by Buck, David Sunday was a great day for Rotarians in the Cedar Valley. Itzhak Perlman's concert topped expectations, leading to six encores. The audience got plenty of excercise, rising to give standing ovations, including when the world-famous violinist came on stage the first time. Before the concert, 260 Rotarians and guests listened to Dr. Bob Scott's update on polio eradication. His message included severeal news items little known beforehand. Though the number of newly reported cases of polio worldwide is down only by 12 percent in the first ten months of the year, there have been no new cases reported in Pakistan since October 17; none in India since October 12, and none in Nigeria or Afghanistan since October 2 according to data from the World Health Organization. "I don't know if you realize what an amazing fact that is," Scott noted. Among the crowd were 50 Rotarians and guests from the Rotary Club of Marion which cancelled its holiday party to attend. Also two Rotary staffers from Evanston and Rotarians from Madison, Ames and Bettendorf joined the throng from our district. It was a grand event. Rotarians Lead "Waterloo Volunteer Day"
by Buck, David November 14 event to help beautify our cities. Sue Beach from our club has put together a coalition of volunteer groups for a community clean up day Tomorrow November 14. Other groups supplying volunteers include the Jaycees and students from Cedar Falls and Waterloo West High. Sue is looking for volunteers on the 14th to work from 8 AM to noon or from noon to 4 PM raking, clearing, picking up trash and helping neighbors prepare for winter. Just show up at 820 Sycamore in Waterloo; bring work gloves, a rake and or a shovel and a pickup truck if you have one. Be sure to dress for the weather. Sue has arranged for everyone who shows up to get a snack, a drink and a special tee shirt proudly stating that "Rotary Works." (plus cleaner neighborhoods.) See the Hawks Play the Panthers
by Buck, David Two basketball tickets, club access and reserved parking up for bid Whether you're a Hawkeye fan or a purple Panther, you'll want to see the two men's teams face off December 8 at the McLeod Center in some of the best seats in the house. Ken Cutts is donating the tickets to the 7 PM game along with his reserved parking pass and two passes to the Club Room where you can celebrate your win or drown your sorrows with free beer and snacks. President Steve will auction the package off on Monday, November 23 just before the annual football banquet. |
