Football the Subject of November 23 Meeting
by Buck, David For the 63rd time, we honor high school seniors from the community's football teams. Highlight of the day will be the awarding of the Glen "Doc" Miller trophy to the city's most valuable player. Program Chair Mike Young will then introduce University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta for closing remarks. |

Don Bosco Senior Wins Volleyball Award
by Buck, David Abby Breitbach becomes second Bosco player to win in 17 years. Abby's Coach Kerry Merrifield could hardly contain his emotions as he recalled the contributions Abby made to Gilbertville Don Bosco's team this year. She was named to the all tournament team and led her teammates to the state tourney in Cedar Rapids where they lost to eventual state champs Tripoli. Monday Abby added to her laurels winning the Rotary Most Valuable Player trophy. The only other Bosco player to do that was Melissa Schmitz in 2002. The trophy will live in the Don Bosco trophy case until next year, but she will get to keep the plaque which goes with it. The plaque was donated again this year by Roger Olesen. When Do We Cancel Meetings?
by Buck, David The club's policy for canceling meetings due to bad weather. If Waterloo public schools have been closed by 8 AM on a Monday, there will be no meeting that day. If Waterloo schools have not closed by 8 AM, Rotary will proceed as scheduled. The cancellation notice will be submitted to KWWL-TV, KCRG-TV, KGAN-TV and the following radio stations: KFMW, KOKZ, KWLO, KXEL, KCRR, KKCV, KOEL-AM and Mix 96FM. We will also send an email out to the membership as soon as we know a meeting has been cancelled. |

Every Rotarian Every Year
by Buck, David Rotary Foundation's Goal: 100 percent participation is support; how are we doing: During November,which is Rotary Foundation month, we are reminded of the importance of supporting ourfoundation and the many good works it supports around the world. It's been a tough year for the foundation's investments, which means there will be cutbacks in programs; some have already been announced. Until investment revenues rebound, for example, the popular group study exchange program will go to every other year in 2010. And with many members making their gifts to the end polio now campaign, that has siphoned off funds going to the annual programs fund even more. So if you are one of the 125 members of our club who have not yet shouldered your share of the load, please consider a gift in the next 45 days. Make your check payable to The Rotary Foundation and give it to Kelli. Rotarians Lead Community Clean Up November 14
by Buck, David Club members Marcela Erickson and Patty Achey Cutts are caught by Courier photographer Dawn Sagert raking leaves. About 100 volunteers worked to clean up properties last weekend led by member of the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Rotary clubs. "Let's get this town beautified," yelled Sue Beach, a Waterloo Rotarian to the group early Saturday before the temperature hit 40 degrees. "There's a whole lot of garbage out there, so you won't be bored." By 8 a.m. the helpers sporting "Rotary Works" T-shirts scattered. Within an hour a Dumpster began filling up. Tires were plucked from wooded areas, metal barrels were found and 8-foot by 4-foot pieces of wood were sitting by the road ready for pick up. Others combed through weeds and found cigarette boxes and glass. Another group of about 40 was working in Waterloo, again led by Rotarians. Bid on Hawks/Panthers Tix
by Buck, David Two basketball tickets, club access and reserved parking up for bid Monday Whether you're a Hawkeye fan or a purple Panther, you'll want to see the two men's teams face off December 8 at the McLeod Center in some of the best seats in the house. Ken Cutts is donating the tickets to the 7 PM game along with his reserved parking pass and two passes to the Club Room where you can celebrate your win or drown your sorrows with free beer and snacks. President Steve will auction the package off on Monday, November 23 just before the annual football banquet. |
