Perlman, Dr. Bob Scott Headline Weekend
by Buck, David We're working hard down to the deadline to pull off two major events this weekend-- the fund raising concert at the Gallagher Bluedorn PAC Sunday evening featuring Itzhak Perlman; and earlier on Sunday we hold a major informational meeting on the polio eradication effort headlining Dr. Bob Scott from Canada who led Rotary's "End Polio Now" effort for the past two years. There are still seats left for the seminar and the dinner that follows, but the concert is a sell out. Contact Sue Beach for dinner tickets. |

Rotarians Lead "Waterloo Volunteer Day"
by Buck, David November 14 event to help beautify our cities. Sue Beach from our club has put together a coalition of volunteer groups for a community clean up day November 14. Other groups supplying volunteers include the Jaycees and students from Cedar Falls and Waterloo West High. Sue is looking for volunteers on the 14th to work from 8 AM to noon or from noon to 4 PM raking, clearing, picking up trash and helping neighbors prepare for winter. Just show up on the 14th at 820 Sycamore in Waterloo; bring work gloves, a rake and or a shovel and a pickup truck if you have one. Be sure to dress for the weather. Sue has arranged for everyone who shows up to get a snack, a drink and a special tee shirt proudly stating that "Rotary Works." (plus cleaner neighborhoods.) Charles City Rotarian to Lead GSE Team
by Buck, David Ralph Smith, attorney from Charles City, will lead the District 5970 team to Poland, Ukraine and Belarus in May 2010. Ralph is a third-generation Rotarian who will represent the ideals of Service above Self. He is very active in the community, presently serving as the president of the local school board and is the city attorney. Four non Rotarian team members will be selected in November to travel with Ralph for a month of professional experiences in the three countries. If you know of a deserving young professional, please contact them and encourage them to apply. The GSE committee also encourages Rotary members to contact employers and business owners to make them aware of this opportunity. The application is on the district website. Consider this a way to serve your club and your community. |

He was a member of Downtown Rotary Club since 1945, a member of First Presbyterian Church for 64 years where he served as an Elder, the No Name Club, Associated Investor's Club, and Toastmasters. He was named to Iowa Nurserymen's Association Hall of Fame in 1989, the Order of Pythagoras of Acacia Fraternity in 2009, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International three times.
Dean enjoyed sailing, hunting, fishing, reading, and traveling throughout the
Dean is survived by his wife Lee Platt of Waterloo, son Richard Dean (Marsha) Platt of Waterloo, daughter Ann (Gary) Fergemann of Kalamazoo, MI, grandson Brian (Katarzyna) Fergemann of Chicago, IL, grandson David Fergemann of Atlanta, GA, granddaughter Caitlyn (Trever) Sittig of New Hampton, IA, granddaughter Allison Platt of Waterloo, IA, granddaughter Breanna Platt of Waterloo, IA, great granddaughter Olivia Fergemann of Chicago, IL, sister Mae (Merv) Coover of Washington, sister Aris Montgomery of Colorado, and brother Robert Platt of California.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Lloyd.

Take the bus to the 2010 International Convention
by Buck, David PDG Dick Moeller of Waverly is organizing a district-wide bus trip and hotel travel package for the Rotary 2010 International Convention in Montreal. The bus will make pick-up stops throughout the district, based on the location of participants. Costs will be finalized once we have an idea of how many people are interested in this opportunity to enjoy fellowship and "Rotarizing" on the way to and from the convention.
